Op (optic) art was based on scientific principles of perceptual dynamics and retinal scintillation. Concentrating on the act of perception as the most important factor in art, this movement explored the potential of both color images and black-and-white linear arrangements to induce a visual experience. It also exploited illusionistic effects by opposing systems of perspective or color areas that contrast violently in hue but are of the same tonal value. Such confrontations created complex pulsations of light and movement. Basically, it messes with your mind and makes you see what may not be obvious to the casual observer.
